WELCOME TO MY CLASSROOM WEBPAGE! Thank you to all of the parents and students who visited my classroom during our Open House night. It was fun to meet all of you and give you a chance to see what your daughter or son will be learning in Tech-Ed this year... I am planning on a school year filled with a lot of funactivities in my classes!!! Parents and family members of my 7th grade students who want to watch the launch of the model rockets they just began building should check back on my website in the next couple weeks to watch for the planned launch day in early October. Visitors must check-in at the main office on the date of the race and then get directed back to my Tech-Ed room. My 7th grade students will continue viewing the movie "October Sky" and doing research about rocketry and the history of space exploration. They will get started on their computer-based learning modules in our modular technology & engineering lab in mid October.
8th graders are reviewing some basic measuring and woodworking skills by creating a giant wooden clothspin. Within the next couple weeks, that will learn how to finish machining it and preparing for water-based stain and polyurethane finish. After that warm-up unit, we will begin the major 8th grade unit where they design and create an heirloom quality hardwood clock. Be looking for an order sheet for parts sometime in mid October.
Any student who is absent from class or behind schedule should plan to come in before or after school to get caught up on their work. I will be available on particular days that I have listed as "Open Lab" for students to do make-up work of get caught up on classwork they do no get completed during their normal class time. Open Lab dates are listed in the 7th & 8th grade class calendars on my website.
Oak View offers a wide variety of after-school activities, and Mr Reiersen and I offer woodworking club activities, fall FIRST LEGO League, winter robotics, and SuperMileage Vehicle team opportunities for students who enjoy hands-on engineering and design learning activities. The 2011 FIRST LEGO League robotics teams started their meetings during the 1st week of school, but there is still plenty of time for additional students to join if they are interested in learning how to design, build, and operate a LEGO robot through a technical obstacle course and do research for a team presentation. The SuperMileage team took 5th Place in the Modified Class last spring with a top fuel economy rating of over 520 miles per gallon. Listen to announcements throughout the school year or check back on my website for more details about all of our after-school groups.
I'm glad that you took time to look up my classroom webpage. I plan to make this website a very useful tool for students, parents & guardians, and other staff who want to learn all about Technology Education here at Oak View. You can click on the buttons at the header area for a particular course to learn about what we are doing on specific days or to access other class information. I may not have activities listed for every day, but I will have important dates like when we start a new unit, due dates, ans well as progress checks along the way. I will also be adding new items that can be downloaded in case your student "forgets" to bring home assignments or forms that must be returned. Eventually I will have practice tests and even some videos to help with missed safety demonstrations and such. Good luck to all of my students! I look forward to a fantastic school year at Oak View.
