Travis Sigafoos Successful at International Science & Engineering Fair |
Travis Sigafoos, a junior at Champlin Park High School (CPHS), recently competed at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Los Angeles. This is the world's largest pre-college science fair.
Travis received three awards for his project, "A clinical and epidemiological approach to the relationship between Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and sleep/wake disorders." They were:
Grand Award: Third place for "Behavioral and Social Sciences" and $1,000 from Intel and Society for Science and the Public, First place award of $1,500 for "Excellence in Behavioral and Social Sciences" from the College of Psychology at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), A $60,000 tuition scholarship to IIT for "Outstanding Excellence in Behavioral and Social Science Research."
Travis was also selected as a semi-finalist in the "Young Epidemiology Scholars Competition" sponsored by the College Board and the Robert John Wood Foundation. For this achievement, the College Board awarded him a $1,000 college scholarship to the school of his choice. In addition, Travis has been recently contacted by admissions at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
There are significant methodological issues in the diagnosis of ADHD because of an unclear etiology and lack of universal diagnostic approach. Travis' project investigated the relationship between sleep/wake problems, social and medical history factors in relation with core ADHD symptoms. He was able to observe the effect of these factors on the prevalence of ADHD symptoms.
"I found sleep deprivation and circadian rhythm deficiencies to have a strong effect on ADHD," Travis said. "In addition, I used a unique application of Receiver Operator Characteristic (ROC) Curve analysis to analyze the predictive significance of specific factors such as school performance in diagnosing the disorder."
Travis said the ISEF is the most amazing and busy week of the year.
"I was able to meet people from more than 65 different countries and Nobel Prize Laureates, go the Santa Monica Beach, Universal Studios and Disneyland, and participate in exciting events sponsored by the ISEF," he said. "And I got to present my research to the top researchers in our individual fields.
"I think the science fair is a really great activity. It's really exciting to be in the select group of alumni from these international and national competitions."
Prior to winning the $60,000 tuition scholarship to IIT, Travis said he had considered attending the school, so it was very exciting to win. While Travis is keeping his options open at this point, if he does attend the school he will double major in psychology and biology.
Travis said he plans to begin the testing for his next project in the next few months. He is planning on applying for the Intel Science Talent Search this fall, where the top 40 projects from the country will compete in Washington D.C. |

Paul Darda, CPHS Social Studies Teacher receives 2011 TOP Award |
Fourteen teachers in the Anoka-Hennepin School District have been selected by their peers, community members and staff to receive the 2011 Teacher Outstanding Performance (TOP) Awards.
The TOP program began during the 1996-97 school year by the Medtronic Foundation based on a belief that it is important to acknowledge and publicize exemplary performance. They made a three-year commitment to the program with the hopes of jump-starting a program that would continue under the direction of the district and the Anoka-Hennepin Educational Foundation (AHEF). Since then, the district and AHEF have partnered to recognize exemplary performance in the classroom.

Paul Darda, social studies, Champlin Park High School
If you are in the hallways of Champlin Park High School and hear students cheering, you won't find an athletic team huddling before a big play. Instead, it's Paul Darda's students doing their pre-test "domination cheer."
"I am ready for this test. I will dominate this test. Bring it on Mr. Darda."
This is just one way Darda motivates and connects with his history students. Because of his passion and dedication, Darda has bee named a 2011 TOP Award winner.
Darda was nominated by a student for his efforts to go above and beyond in his teaching, as well as his own learning. The student described what makes him a successful teacher.
"The most unique trait Darda exhibits is his enthusiasm," said the student. "Whether it is by standing on chairs, waving his arms, making crazy faces and noises, or playing music while he gives inspirational speeches before a test, Darda's enthusiasm excites and motivates his students.
"Everyday I look forward to his class, which, although is the most rigorous, is the most compelling and exciting."
Darda also helps his students to learn the lessons of history by re-enacting them. After students read about the poor working conditions of the early 1900s, Darda burst into the room in costume and put the students through a grueling product assembly line as a factory boss that fails to grant any worker rights. When students read about trench warfare in World War I, they found themselves in makeshift trenches in class and as "soldiers" journaled about their experience.
"Being unconventional is often being labeled as being weird or sometimes even as not following the rules," Darda said. "It's risky to be unconventional, but the reward is connecting with kids."
Darda started to see history in a new light as a student at Augsburg College in Minneapolis. He was in a class required to debate whether or not the atomic bomb should have been dropped in Japan in 1945.
"I saw then that history could be debated and challenged," he said. "It wasn't just facts." From there, Darda began taking education-related classes and working with kids. He said he felt really energized by teaching and working with high school students.
In his first job out of college, Darda has been at Champlin Park High School for 10 years. Darda is thankful for working with a supportive staff and phenomenal teachers who have helped shape him.
"I am blessed to be surrounded by exceptional teachers who I learn from everyday and a truly wonderful staff, who along with my students make the job so fulfilling," he said. "I have had the opportunity over the last 10 years to work with an amazing student body that truly dominates. Being passionate about teaching is not a task for me; it's a result of the job."
Darda said it "feels great" to receive a TOP Award. "I think teachers don't expect an award for what they do," Darda said. "This nomination came from a student. The fact that she took the time to reflect on and write about her experience of having me as a teacher is the real reward to me."

Five Champlin Park High School students progress to national, international competitions |
Five Champlin Park High School students progress to national, international competitions
(Story courtesy Anoka-Hennepin Backpack Online e-newsletter)
The science projects of five Champlin Park High School (CPHS) students were selected at the Regional Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Fair held in St. Cloud in February to advance to national and international competition. The students also displayed their projects at the State STEM Fair in March in Bloomington.
Selected for the Junior Science and Humanities Symposia (JSHS) were Karin Sather, senior, Travis Sigafoos, junior, Connor Klemenhage, sophomore, and Adeel Ahmad, sophomore. Competition was held at the same time at the State STEM Fair.
Travis received an "outstanding achievement" and Karin was selected to attend the national competition in April in San Diego as an observer.
Karin and Connor were also selected for the Genius Olympiad, an international high school science and art competition devoted to projects on environmental issues.
Co-organized by the State University of New York (SUNY) at Oswego and the Terra Science Education Foundation, the event will be held in June on the Oswego campus.
Travis and Avinash Persaud, a senior, were selected to attend the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) to be held in May in Los Angeles.
Adeel Ahmad
Adeel's project is "The Effect of Sucrose on the pH Levels of Different Beverages: A Correlation Confirmation." The project looked to see if the addition of sucrose affects the acidity level of a beverage.
Adeel was inspired to do the project after receiving a list of beverages he should avoid from his orthodontist.
"I noticed that these drinks were not only highly acidic, but they had a high sugar content," Adeel said. "So I wanted to see if there was a correlation between the two."
Science fairs are a great way to meet people and get better ideas for next year, Adeel said.
"The science fair is a very unique program, and should be required for the middle school curriculum, as it can teach many different objectives," he said.
Karin Sather
Karin's project is "Effects of urbanization: Analysis of acer platanoides, fraxinus pennsylvanica, acer xfreemanii, quercus bicolor, and tillia cordata as sources of organic pollution in urban environments." In easier terms, it's what turns water green.
Karin began her work on looking at leaves as a source of pollution to urban bodies of water about two years ago. She has been working with two professors and a graduate student from the University of Minnesota's (U of M) Department of Ecology as part of the Household Ecosystem Project. Karin does not get paid or receive credit for her work; she just loves to do it.
With more work to be done on the project, Karin will continue her work this summer. If she decides to attend the U of M, she could take the project even further.
Karin has been participating in science fairs since she was a freshman. In her sophomore year, she attended the International Sustainable World Engineering, Energy and Environment Project (ISWEEEP) and her junior year attended ISEF. These experiences have not only helped her with science, but also communication, writing, and social skills.
"I've met people from different countries," she said. "I've made amazing connections and have friends across the globe because of science fairs."
Karin is looking at colleges right now and wants to do a MD/PhD program so she can practice medicine or teach.
Travis Sigafoos
Travis will be attending his third ISEF. He is also being considered for the College Boards Young Epidemiology Scholars Competition (YES) to be held in Washington D.C. in April.
Travis project this year is "Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and sleep." It builds on Travis's STEM project last year that looked at the education perspective of ADHD by looking at the clinical aspect of ADHD to better understand and diagnose it.
Travis said that the science fair is the single most important event in the process of education.
"It's not just about science," he said, "it's learning English, public speaking, valuable social skills Everything you learned in school comes together to create a science fair project."
Science fair projects also give students an opportunity to think outside the textbook and to do research similar to that of college students. Their projects are then judged by researchers and doctors who are doing this work in their areas of expertise.
As a junior, Travis is considering his future plans. At this point he is thinking about behavioral science. Whatever Travis decides, participating in science fairs will benefit his educational goals and career path.
Connor Klemenhagen
A member of the math and science team when he was a student at Jackson Middle School, Connor has been participating in STEM fairs since sixth grade. Connor's project, "The diversification of turf grass species by means of biodiversity," builds on work he did last year and work he plans to do in the future. Although almost 2 percent of the Earth's surface is occupied by turf grass, very little study outside of genetics has been done on the topic.
Connor was inspired to explore this area of study after a seventh-grade field trip to the Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve in East Bethel where they do a lot of biodiversity studies. Connor is being mentored by U of M staff at the Center and will start a plant study that will run this spring through his senior year in high school.
A strong supporter of STEM fairs, Connor believes once a student goes to fair, he or she will want to go again. He said each year a student participates in a science fair, he or she learns more about the process, more about other competitors' projects, and it increases his or her chances of advancing to higher level competition.
"You get to learn more about the scientific community at a science fair than anywhere else," Connor said. "Districts like ours were extremely smart to start STEM fairs at the middle school level. It's made a huge difference for me and other kids.
"I recommend the district never cut STEM fairs so we can continue to do great research. The work we do now gives us long-term direction for our lives. If our district cannot support science fairs, it is not supporting practical education."
Connor is interested in attending the U of M, where he has attended workshops through the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANR). He would like to have a double major in environmental research and political science. Although Connor would like to be a researcher for rest of his life, he said "when you are a politician, you in charge of funding,"
Connor has high praise for Kevin Molohon, Anoka-Hennepin STEM Fair coordinator and a science teacher at CPHS.
"Mr. Molohon is what a mentor should be," Connor said. "There is nothing negative you can find out him. In addition to a being a mentor, he's the best teacher I've ever had; he is energetic, always willing to help students and committed to things he cares about. What he'll do for a science fair project is beyond what other teachers would do."
Avinash Persaud
Avinash's project, "Zebrafish as a model for predicting drug-induced arrhythmias," was inspired by his love for biology and his experience of having open-heart surgery when he was two years old.
In the past decade, there has been a substantial increase in drug complications. Drug companies must to tests on their drugs. Tests can be expensive, but drug companies need good ways to test their drugs so people do not get hurt. Because zebrafish are a vertebrate animal, they have become a valuable resource for identifying genes involved in human disease Avinash is using them as a biological model to study cardiac rhythms. He believes zebrafish can be used to save lives and money.
Avinash believes science fairs provide an opportunity for students to share their work with the public.
"It's not about winning awards," said Avinash who has been an observer at two ISEFs, "it's about sharing what you passionate about with others. Attending the ISEF inspires you to see what kids are capable of and inspires you to want to do research at that level at a young age."
Participating in science fairs has help Avinash to build self-esteem.
"I have become more confident in what doing," he said. "Confidence is key is doing good in test taking and things we have to do at school. Participating in science fairs has also taught me a lot of time management, speaking and other skills critical to my education and future."
Avinash is considering studying genetics and bio chemistry, but it's "subject to change."

CP Comp Cheer placed as Grand Champions at the UPA National Competition. |
Congratulations to Champlin Park Comp Cheer who placed as Grand Champions at the National Competition at the UPA National Cheer Competition this weekend in Minneapolis.
CHAMPLIN PARK COMP. SQUAD
ENDS SEASON ON A HIGH NOTE
Champlin Park's Competition
Cheerleaders had a tumultuous start to their season last April. Head Coach Angela Schrock anno
unced that this
would be her last season after 10 years with Champlin Park, and there were
changes in the Assistant Coach position as well. The squad also lost many of their veteran
members and was now composed of fully half new members who had never competed,
several of whom had never cheered before.
The new teammates decided to
look at this positively as what they called "a growing year" for their
much-loved squad, and got right to work learning stunts, working on their
routine, and sharpening their skills.
They had an impressive season, taking second place at all the area high
school competitions they attended, including the Universal Cheerleaders
Association Regional 10,000 Lakes competition.
The squad also placed second at the Minnesota Cheer Coaches Association
State Tournament, and captured fourth place at both the Universal Cheerleaders
Association "Spirit of America" competition and the Jamfest Chicago Nationals
competition.
February 26 and 27 saw the
Champlin Park Competition Cheerleaders off to the Minneapolis Convention Center
for their last competition of the season and of Coach Schrock's career, the
United Performing Association's AmeriCup Nationals. After earning enough points to place them
first in their division, they moved ahead to the Grand Champions round. Following some very stiff competition and
what Coach Schrock called their best performance of the year, Champlin Park was
awarded the Grand Champions trophy, High School Varsity division. "It's an especially sweet victory," team captain Rachelle Nolan says, "after all
the squad's been through this year!"

BPA Students Qualify for State |
Congratulations go out to the BPA kids who competed in our Region 4 events on Wednesday, February 2nd!
Our two Region Officers, Sam Pirjevec and Arika Nyhus, and our State President, Simpson Fongthian, put on quite a show. Not to mention we had a few awesome judges show up: Steve Hall, Chris Hay, Kim Denny, and former graduate, Heather Ahola.
Also, ALL of our students from the Internship class received the Region Torch Award. Each students had to have 30 pts in 7 different categories of community service, leadership, and patriotism. We are the ONLY school in the region that did this. I don't think we've had a year that ALL of the kids have reached this level. Watch for students who will go for state (50 pts in each category) and national (70 pts).
Please congratulate these kids on a job VERY WELL done. Bold denotes a state qualifier.

Karin Sather KARE 11’s Academic All-Star this week |

Academic All Star Karin Sather
CHAMPLIN PARK, Minn. -- For somebody who enjoys skiing as much as Karin Sather, the Champlin Park senior hardly looked excited with skis in hand.
Trudging through the snow on a crystal-clear January morning, Sather looked like she was headed for the principal's office rather than the ski hill. But, that's because there was no ski hill. Sather, a captain of the Alpine ski team was headed out to ski cross-country for P.E. class, and while she likes cross country skiing, for Karin, it doesn't come close to racing down hill.
"Skiing is one of those crazy things where you just don't really understand why you do it", says Karin. Especially racing, because there's nothing smart about it, nothing smart about it!"
And, Karin Sather should know about what's smart, and what isn't.
Ranked #6 in her class with a GPA of 4.2, Karin's award-winning participation in STEM and Science Fairs, has led to funded research at the U of M.
"This year I'm looking at leaf decomposition rates", says Karin. "More specifically, which type of leaf leaches the most nutrients when it's on an impermeable surface?"
And, the bottom line is..
"Don't put chemicals on your grass because it runs right into the water".
An A.P. Scholar with distinction, and a recipient of the Presidential Volunteer Service award, Karin's life and academic experience was impacted by her second major accident while down hill racing.
"They came in and said that they had good news and bad news", says Karin "The good news is all of my internal organs are fine and the bad news is that I had three fractures in my lower back."
Karin followed 5-days on her back, with 9-months in a back brace, and 6-months of physical therapy.
Says Karin, "I learned a lot about people from breaking my back and it's the kind of thing that's going to change the rest of the way that I view life and my values."
Outstanding in science research, Karin emerged from the experience with a desire to help others facing a life challenge of their own.
"I'm leaning more towards medicine because I want to be able to more directly help people", says Karin.
In that vein, Karin teaches English as a 2nd language and helps disabled adults learn to read.
Proving that this 3-time captain of the Alpine ski team can change it up and still produce outstanding results.
Says Karin, "I still like cross country skiing, it's fun, but, not as fun as down hill.""
