Component 2:

Task 1:  Identify two companies and one product produced by each company that directly relates to the NCT technical application your team has selected.

  • Mage® Water Management produced a product called the Watercone®. It is set-up so that the Sun's energy will evaporate contaminated water. Then, the water condenses on the walls of the product and trickles down to a collection trough. http://www.watercones.com/

Task 2:  Identify one professional association of trade organization associated with the products your team identified.

PNCWA :
Pacific Northwest Clean Water Association (PNCWA) is dedicated to preserving and enhancing the water quality in the states of Idaho, Oregon and Washington. We promote the professional development of our members, the dissemination of information to the public, and the advancement of science and technology needed to protect public health and the environment

Board: Cyndy Bratz: President; Mark Poling: President-Elect: Heather Stephens: Secretary; Shannon Taylor: Treasurer; Andy O’Neill: Past President; Max Hildebrand: WEF Director; Rick Shanley: WEF Director; Gil Bridges: Regional Director Western Washington; Tom Hastings: Regional Director Eastern Washington; Ron Gearheart: Regional Director Idaho; Steve Miles: Regional Director Oregon; Nan Cluss and Mike Rainey: Association Managers

Task 3:  Propose and describe a new product or new process based on your team's NCT technical application

Our project is a water purifier for camping that uses evaporation and condensation to get clean water.  This project will be designed to be placed over a campfire vertically. The water will be placed in the bottom of the container so that the water will evaporate into a hose, located at the top of the container, and leave behind any impurities that are in the water. Then the water vapor will travel to a coil in a box, via the hose.  The coil will be then attached to a spigot on the box. The vapor will condense in the coil to create a clean water supply for the average camper. Ice/snow could be placed in the box to cool down the water to get cold water. This process will take a while, but it will make sure that the drinking and cooking water for campers will be safe, because the heat will also kill the bacteria found in the water.

Task 4: Via the internet, locate a company that might be able to manufacture your team's proposed product. Send the company an e-mail asking that someone in the company evaluate the product your team proposed. Provide on your webste the e-mail request you sent, the names of the manufacturers to whom you sent the request and include any responses received.

This is the e-mail we sent the company Coleman:

Dear Coleman,

We have a product here that we think you might be interested in. It is a simplistically designed water cleaning apparatus that uses only heat to do it. The product is meant to be used in the case that a camper doesn't have any clean water to drink or bathe with. All you do is fill up the container with water or snow, put it over a campfire, and let the heat build up, evaporate the water into water vapor and steam, and then this will move through a spiral tube. When the steam goes through, it will come in contact with the tube that is being constantly cooled by either moving air, which you can do with a fan, or a box of ice or snow, which you can easily make yourself. And if all is working, the water will come out the other side as clean, drinkable water. We would like you to review our project and send us your feedback.

Thank you

The Purifiers.
