Mentors

During the design process of our product, the team got an enormous amount of help from Professor James F and Mechanical Engineer Nic P. They have advised and helped the team throughout the entire process, each in different ways. We are greatly thankful for all their help and cooperation through these last couple months.

Professor James F.

James F is a temporary faculty member at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. He is also the Associate Director of the Minnesota Space Grant, a NASA Higher Education program whose goals include promoting interest in space science and space exploration.Dr. F's academic background is in experimental physics and he has taught many physics, astronomy, and introductory engineering classes in the past. He enjoys using high-altitude ballooning as a low-cost means of giving college students hands-on experience building and flying space hardware. We typically meet with James F. at Blaine High School or at his office at the University of Minnesota anywhere from once a week to once every two weeks. We must also give him credit for the various supplies that he has lent us including a HAM radio, a handheld ETREK GPS, a raw GPS from Elktronics and various Global Positioning Programs.

Mechanical Engineer Nic P.

Nic P. is a college graduate from St. Thomas University whose focus was in mechanical engineering. Nic has been previously employed as a Laboratory Technician at 3M and now is currently working at a company called Hysitron. Hysitron manufactures nanomechanical testing instrumentation. He is a mechanical design engineer and works in the sustaining engineering department. This means that he is mostly tasked with modifications or designs to existing equipment. However, he is currently spearheading a project that is entirely new to the product line. He has assisted us in the design of our GPS case and has also bounced multiple ideas back and forth from our brainstorming to actual implementation.
