FROM:   Allison Bradford, Patty Duenow, Esther Motyka

SUBJECT:   Nutrient Information Request

Enclosed is the nutrient information you requested on school meals.

Please be advised that this is general information and not intended to be used as medical advice.  The information is accurate to the best of our knowledge on the date it was compiled from manufacturer's data.  However, a number of issues can change the accuracy of the information:
•   A manufacturer may change the composition of any product at any time without notification.
•   Products may be substituted due to supply challenges.
•   Students may consume larger or smaller portions than stated.

The United States Department of Agriculture (U.S.D.A.) requires that school lunches provide 1/3 of the Recommended Dietary allowance (RDA) for protein, calcium, iron, vitamin A, and vitamin C, and 1/3 of the calories needed by growing children, based on the appropriate age/grade group.  School breakfasts must provide ¼ of the RDA for the same five nutrients and ¼ of the necessary calories appropriate for the age/grade group.

School meals must show progress toward meeting the recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines for limiting calories from total fat to 30% or less and saturated fat to less than 10%.  Other nutrients are not tracked at this time.

For the most accurate information available, please contact the cafeteria supervisor at your child's school to arrange a time to look at the package labels that concern you.
