Task One

Prepare a 200- to 300-word history about the National Critical Technology (NCT) technical application your team has selected to solve a local or national problem.

Our problem is that when people in the United States get into their car only 62% of them are wearing their seatbelt. Many studies show that most people, who do not wear a seatbelt, do not wear them because it is uncomfortable. Our goal is to save lives. If everyone wore their seatbelts, lives will be saved

People say they do not wear their seatbelt because it is uncomfortable to wear. One reason why it is uncomfortable is because when they put it on the seatbelt comes up to their neck and cuts into it. Another reason that seatbelts are uncomfortable, is I f they are tall they are to low on their shoulder and it does not protect them as well. Also Kids in the back seat tend to put the shoulder belt behind their backs because it comes up to their heads.

Approximately 35,000 people die in motor vehicle accidents each year. About 50% of those people could be saved if they wore their seatbelt. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (HTSA) passengers in the back seat, wearing a seatbelt are 44% more effective at preventing death or injury then not wearing it  (Madison, 2004). I believe that if this product was made seatbelts will be more comfortable to wear for children and adults and will encourage them to wear their seatbelts.

Task Two

Cite three detailed examples of research done in the past 3 to 5 years which focused on the NCT technical application your team selected. Include:

  • the funding agency,
  • the principal investigator's name, and
  • the institution where the research is or was being conducted.

 Example 1:

Oklahoma State University (OSU) published this research site about how many people die in car accidents each year. They also talk about what happens to a person inside a car when they get into an accident. The website explains how to wear your seatbelt right and why people say they don't wear a seatbelt.

  Example 2:

Kim Mueller and David Veneziano teamed up with the Iowa Department of Transportation investigated what races tend to get into accidents more than others. They found that African Americans wear tend not to wear a seatbelt and Hispanics tend to get into more car accidents.

  Example 3:

The Ministry of Transportation did research on how many people a year get into accidents and how many of the die in the car accidents. It also talks about the percentage wearing rate in the front and back seat of a vehicle. They also talk about that children and the adults need to wear their seatbelts so that person who dies in a car accident won't be them.

Task Three

Based on the research your team has done, explain how the NCT application chosen has advanced scientific knowledge.

Power electronics has helped to improve scientific knowledge for many scientists and inventors. One way power electronics has helped scientific knowledge is the ability of downloading items onto a device to store information. Another reason is, knowing how to transmit information wirelessly.

Downloading items on a device to store them has impacted the world in many ways. For example it is way easier for the government to have all U.S. citizens stored on a computer then to have files and files of paper. This is much more convenient because it takes up less space and quicker. Other examples are people all over the world buying iPods and MP3 players to store and listen to music they liked instead of listening to the radio or using a tape or CD player. It works better for consumers to use to because it won't skip like a CD player and is smaller and could be stored in someone's pocket when not in use. As scientific technology continues to grow, engineers and inventors will make more ideas to store information that might be easier for the public to use.

The ability to transmit information wirelessly has greatly impacted the world. Some devices that use wireless technology are the cell phone, computer, GPS, satellites, radio, internet, and transmitters.  Billions of people all over the world listen to the radio or watch television and talk on the phone at least once a day. Without all this technology it will be a lot harder for engineers and scientists to invent simple items as the tooth brush.

Wireless technology now is a big part of everyday lives for people. Wireless technology is also a big part of our military and armed forces. Our technology has given us advantages in warfare.  Warheads are now designed with remotes to be set off by someone at a safe distance. This keeps our soldiers safer.

As you can see power electronics has greatly impacted and world and has advanced scientific technology in many ways. As we expand our technology life as we know it will be improved even farther beyond what we know today
