SCHOOL ATTENDANCE BOUNDARY CHANGES 2009

SchoolCenter Picture As a result of the decision to close six schools and two kindergarten centers at the end of 2009-10, elementary school attendance boundaries were changed for the 2010-11 school year. The School Board approved boundaries at its Nov. 23, 2009 meeting, except for a proposal for Madison and University Avenue that was considered by the board on Dec. 14, 2009.

Maps of the boundaries are available to download in
low resolution and high resolution
versions (the high resolution version will have the most map detail). Click here to download new school boundary maps. The approved boundaries went into effect for the 2010-11 school year.

Public hearings were
organizd around the feeder schools for each high school. Click on links below to download PDF versions of original presentations made at each public hearing. Proposals were changed based on public input between these presentations and the Nov. 9, 2009 School Board meeting:

Board approves 2010-11 attendance boundaries

Adams, Hamilton, Hoover, Johnsville, Lincoln, L.O. Jacob and Sand Creek elementary schools had additional boundary meeting at their school in order to present new or revised proposals regarding school attendance boundaries.

School attendance boundaries have not been changed since 2001. The goal of this process was to establish boundaries that would remain for at least five years. Care was taken to modify boundaries so that schools did not become racially isolated and to ensure that services and programs are distributed fairly.

  • There were no changes for middle school attendance boundaries except for Sandburg
  • There were no changes for high school attendance areas
  • All schools with new students had transition teams to welcome the students and families into their school community

Elementary schools

  • Kindergarten students who would have attended Park View Early Childhood Center and Peter Enich Kindergarten Center in 2010-11 were assigned to their neighborhood elementary school for their attendance area
  • The attendance areas for Riverview Specialty School and Champlin Elementary became the attendance area for a specialty school at the Park View and old Oxbow Creek Elementary (current west end of Jackson Middle School) sites (now called Champlin-Brooklyn Park Academy for Math and Environmental Science)
  • Students at L.O. Jacob, Sorteberg and Washington were moved to nearby schools - the proposed new boundaries were presented at school meetings
  • Other elementary school boundaries were adjusted accordingly and some boundaries that have become obsolete since 2001 were adjusted.

Sandburg/Fred Moore

  • The Sandburg Middle School attendance area was combined with the Fred Moore Center for the Arts attendance area. The combined school continues it focus the arts focus. Beginning with 2010-11, sixth grade students in this attendance area will have their own campus in the former Washington Elementary School building and access to facilities at the Fred Moore Campus.
