Welcome to English 11.  In this course, we will be studying American literature in a chronological approach.  English 11 has the over arching theme of the American Dream.  Our objective is to read and analyze a variety of American literature within a historical perspective to gain a cultural understanding of the values for a particular period in time.

The time periods we will be examining are:

  • Colonialism (1600 - 1800)   Bradstreet, Edwards, Jefferson

  • American Romanticism (1800 - 1860) Longfellow, Thoreau, Hawthorne

  • Realism (1860 - 1914)   Douglass, Lincoln, Chopin

  • Modernism (1914 - 1939)   Frost, Hughes, Hurston, Clifton

  • Contemporary (1939 - Present)   Cofer, Tan, Walcott

Along with the reading and analysis of literature, there are four "writing" assignments which are District Common Assessments for the 11th grade.  A common assessment means that all 11th grade students must do these assignments and they must be turned into the school district by the teacher.  The Common Assessments are:

  • Media Analysis Paper:  Students will analyze a print ad and write an essay identifying techniques, style and cultural value of the ad.  This will be done near the beginning of 1st quarter.

  • Persuasive speech with research:  Students will research and present a speech persuading student to take action or change thinking on some topic or issue. This will be done near the end of 1st quarter.

  • Research Essay:  Students will examine a person, place, piece of literature or music and research how this topic has impacted the contemporary American culture.  This paper will be done near the end of the 2nd quarter.

  • Reflection Portfolio:  Students will write 3 brief essays where reflection on a particular period of time and its values is still felt in contemporary culture.  This project will be done throughout the quarter, usually at the end of one of the periods.

Independent reading will be 10% of your grade.  Independent reading materials can be anything that is in print such as but not limited to book, magazines, graphic novels, etc.  Each day, students will receive 10 points arriving to class with independent reading material and spending the allotted time independently reading.  Students will receive 5 points for arriving to class without reading material and a book must be loaned for the reading time; the student must read for the allotted reading time to receive the 5 points.  Finally a student may receive a zero for not reading during the allotted reading time.
