Roosevelt Parent Partnership Team Background and History:
Roosevelt Middle School began a journey, in 2006-07, focused on maintaining and improving its partnerships with family and community. We chose to become one of the schools in the Anoka-Hennepin School District that are part of a nation-wide network of schools promoting community partnerships. One of the components of this journey to becoming a partnership school is to establish a diverse action team comprised of staff, parents, and community members.
The purpose of the action team is to:
• Sustain and improve family and community connections that support student success at home, school and in the community.
• Explore new and innovative ideas for partnering with families and the community.
• Establish goals that involve the entire community and assist Roosevelt students in their achievement and success in school and life.
• Work with a national network of schools, districts, and states, all striving to develop partnerships that help students succeed.
• Collaborate with the Roosevelt Site Council (RSC) and Volunteer Program.
Since we started the RPPT has been nationally recognized three times for programs at RMS.
Established in 1996 by national researches at Johns Hopkins University, the National Network of Partnership Schools is directed by well-known parent involvement researcher, Joyce Epstein. We've all heard the phrase "It takes a village to raise a child." The philosophy of a partnership school is based on the premise that if all members of a community work together to care for our children, they will do better in school and life.
The Partnership School concept is based on 6 types of involvement, developed by Joyce Epstein and her colleagues. They are:
Type 1 Parenting - Help all families establish home environments to support children
Type 2 Communicating - Design effective forms of school-to-home and home-to-school communication about school programs and their children's progress
Type 3 Volunteering - Recruit and organize parent help & support
Type 4 Learning at Home - Provide information and ideas to families about how to help students at home with homework and other curriculum-related activities, decisions, and planning
Type 5 Decision Making - Include parents in school decisions, developing parent leaders
Type 6 Collaborating with the Community - Identify and integrate resources and services from the community to strengthen school programs, family practices and student learning and development
The Anoka-Hennepin School District is committed to supporting partnerships through these 6 types of involvement. The School Board feels strong partnerships can be developed through nurturing respect, sharing knowledge, supporting each partner's role, collaborating on matters of importance and appreciating the contributions each partner makes to student achievement.
