We are again offering an opportunity for purchasing student supplies right at school.  A partnership with Wal-Mart has allowed us to offer a prepackaged NMS backpack for each grade including necessary school supplies. The cost of these prepackaged bags are $20 for grade 6, $22 for grade 7, and $24 for grade 8.  This backpack contains the necessary school supplies your child will need to begin the school year.

Discipline Policy:

• Weapons Policy - no weapons on school grounds which includes the bus stop and school events
• Fighting - No fighting will be tolerated.  Fighting is an expellable offense depending on the circumstances
• Drugs and Alcohol - possession and transmission of drugs and alcohol are expellable offenses
• Keeping your hands to yourself - we have had increasing instances in which students have been referred for expulsion because of inappropriate touching or physical contact.  Please keep your hands to yourself
• Disruptive students - students that are sent to the office on a continuous basis due to classroom disruption can be expelled

Insurance Information for Parents

We wish to emphasize that the District does not provide any type of health or accident insurance for injuries incurred by your child at school.  As a service to students and their families, the school district is making available a Student Accident insurance plan through Guarantee Trust Life Insurance Company for less than $100 per year.

The premium for this policy is minimal per year for school-time coverage.  All school-sponsored and supervised activities and time spent in school are covered in accordance with the terms and limitations of the policy. (Skiing is excluded.  Football coverage is available for an additional charge.) For an increased premium, the policy will cover your child 24 hours a day, 12 months a year, rather than only during school-time. Deluxe Benefits are also available for an additional premium.

There are two major reasons to purchase this coverage:
1.  Deductibles and co-pays in your health plan. Many health plans have increased the amount of out-of-pocket expenses.
2.  No other insurance.

The plan will provide benefits for medical expenses incurred because of an accident. If you have other insurance, the policy benefits will be applied to your deductible or co-pay. If you have no other insurance, this policy will become your primary accident plan.

The Guarantee Trust Life Insurance Company underwrites the plan. A brochure that explains the plan and details of coverage is available at the school office. Coverage for student athletes on the free or reduced lunch program who have no other insurance will be provided by the district at no cost to the student but only if requested. You must apply for this coverage and return the application form to the school to obtain coverage.

To enroll your child in this accident plan, it is necessary to proceed as follows:

1.  Obtain the brochure and application from the school office.
2.  Print name, addresses and other information clearly on the form.
3. Please enclose a check or money order made payable to FIRST AGENCY, INC.
4.  Detach and retain the summary of coverage, and return the envelope to First Agency, Inc.  Coverage becomes effective as soon as the application and premium are received by First Agency, Inc.
5.  All questions regarding this coverage should be directed to First Agency, Inc at 269-381-6630 or 800-243-6298.

Student accident insurance is available

Anoka-Hennepin schools work hard to provide a safe environment for students. The district’s Health and Safety Committee reviews concerns and suggests safe practices for schools to follow. However, despite best efforts, accidents do occasionally happen. Even normal childhood activities such as playing on the playground or participating in physical education classes carry a potential for injury.

The district does not provide insurance coverage for accidents that may occur during the regular school day.  Parents should consider this when planning their family insurance program. As a service to students and their families, the district is offering its students the opportunity to purchase low cost student accident insurance at a nominal cost. (Less than $75 per year for at school protection under the standard plan.) This insurance can help with deductibles and co-pays under your health insurance plan or provide primary coverage for accidents when no health insurance is available.  All school-sponsored and supervised activities and time spent in school are covered as defined by the terms and limitation of the policy. (Skiing is excluded.  Football coverage is available for an additional charge)  Families can purchase 24 hour coverage for an increased premium. Additional benefits are available by purchasing Deluxe Benefits coverage.

Please note insurance is recommended for students participating in district athletics.

For brochures and applications on the accident program, contact your school office. Applications will not be distributed to students at school. You must request a brochure and application if you are interested. This year we are also adding the option to purchase coverage on-line using a Visa or Mastercard. The IMC is open after school on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:15 to 4:15 so students can have access to computers and materials for homework and class assignments. The after school bus is available for these days and times.

ZAP (Zeros Aren't Permitted)

Students are more successful in school when they complete and hand-in assignments. Teachers have been working to create plans for helping students complete essential assignments. The following list of interventions is just a sampling of what might occur to help your child be successful.

Levels of Interventions
Assigned Project is not complete by the deadline--taking into account IEP's, 504's, days absent, . . . . Teacher checks for understanding and to determine if time or help is needed.  If time is the issue:

Level One Interventions
Reminders and prodding are used to get the assignment complete.  This MAY include:

• Planner checks
• Student calls home to remind him/herself to bring the assignment.
• Teacher calls or e-mails parent/guardian.
• Other ideas

Level Two Intervention
Classroom/Course based interventions are used to help the student complete the assignment.  This MAY include:  

• Teachers of the same curriculum flexibly grouping students during the class to allow for reteaching or additional time.
• Homeroom homework make-up time on Wednesdays and Good Morning, Northdale Fridays if needed.
• Other ideas

Level Three Intervention
School-based interventions are used to help student complete the assignment.  This MAY include:

• ZAP Lunch Program--students could be assigned a working lunch when they struggle getting assignments done on time.

Level Four Intervention

• In school placement in another classroom or office until work is completed
• Meeting with teacher, office staff, parent/guardian, and student
