Challenge Reading

This is one the student talent development activities we have to offer for selected students in each grade. Small groups of students (usually 6-10 in a group) will read the same book during a prescribed time frame and meet to discuss their reading. Volunteers are needed to be Challenge Reading Leaders. The leaders will meet with the students once a week for one hour outside of school hours.  Skills needed are an enthusiasm for reading and a willingness to share that with students. Training is provided.

Math Plus

This volunteer opportunity is offered to selected students in grades K-5. Math Plus is aimed to provide additional, on-going mathematical experiences for students who enjoy problem solving situations, show persistence in challenging activities and have a high level of interest in math at home and school.  Volunteers are needed to be Math Plus Leaders.  Leaders will meet with a small group of students (5-8 to a group) once a week for an hour outside of school hours (either before or after school) to work on fun math activities.  Training is provided!

Destination Imagination

This talent development opportunity gives students an opportunity to "explore imagination through creative problem solving." Teams of 5-7 students work together to solve a given problem in a creative way and then present their solutions at competitions. Volunteers are needed to be Destination Imagination coaches. This volunteer opportunity runs October-March. The DI team determines the practice schedule by the needs of the project. Meeting are held outside of school hours. Training is provided.

Stock Market Game

This talent development opportunity through Best Prep Organization is designed to assist students in learning about securities markets and their role in the American economic system. In addition, This opportunity allows students to enhance their economic and math skills as well as their abilities in decision making and cooperative learning. The students, along with their parent volunteer, will participate in a team that is given a virtual $100,000 to invest in common stocks via the Internet. This program is offered to 4th and 5th grade students and meets outside of the school hours depending upon the volunteer's schedule. Sessions run either September - December or January - April. Teams need to participate a minimum of 5 weeks during the session but can participate longer dependent upon the teams interest and the volunteers availability. Training is provided.

Word Masters

Word Masters is a national contest in grades 3-8 that encourages growth in vocabulary and verbal reasoning. This contest helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically, by challenging the students to complete analogies based on a special vocabulary list. A Word Master volunteer would lead a small group of 8-10 students for 1 hour each week before school. This opportunity would start mid-late October and end in April. Two volunteers per grade levels 3-5 are needed.
