Emotional or Behavioral Disorder
An emotional/behavioral disability is characterized by one or more of the following: * Displayed pervasive mood of unhappiness or depression * Consistent or chronic inappropriate type of behavior or feelings under normal conditions * Inability to learn that cannot be adequately explained by intellectual, sensory, or health factors * Displayed tendency to develop physical symptoms, pain, or fears associated with personal or school problems * Inability to build and maintain interpersonal relationships with peers/and or teachers * Severe problems with social competence which impair relationships with adults and peers. * Severe problems in academic performance which is related to the emotional and behavior disability. Here are some guidelines that may be helpful for managing inappropriate behavior: 1. Examine the events that maintain students behavior. 2. Keep data to determine if our approach is working. 3. Use and consider many different techniques while trying to correct the behavior. 4. Combine approaches to behavior management that are effective for the child in question. 5. Concentrate on teaching new behaviors and deal only with wrong behaviors when it interferes with the child's learning. 6. Never give up hope.
