Specific Learning Disability (SLD) |
Student with a specific learning disabilities have average to above average intellectual ability, but due to processing disorders, or their ability to acquire new information, store information, and retrieve information, students with specific learning disabilities are faced with several academic challenges.
Because a child is diagnosed with SLD it does not mean they are not capable of learning. What it does mean is that the style in which they learn may be different from that of other students. The purpose of special education is to identify how that student learns, and provide opportunities for the student to be successful academically.
Here is some information on several of the strategies that are used in our department:
Orton Gillingham- This program is a multi-sensory approach to improving student reading and vocabulary skills. There is also a focus on spelling rules that help students increase their spelling accuracy.
Linda Mood- This is a program used in reading instruction that focuses on teaching student to read through a multi-sensory approach.
Touchpoint Math- Is a program designed to help students become more secure in there ability to manipulate numbers. It provides them with a visual that helps increase their number correspondence.
