GO TEAM! PRACTICE makes perfect! Just like in any sport learning & then practicing the fundamentals is how you win. High frequency words are the fundamentals of reading.
The Word Wall is a big part of our Room! After we learn how to read and spell a high frequency word it gets put on the Word Wall, from that day on the students are responsible for knowing the word. If they forget, they can look it up on our wall! Below the picture the words that we have learned this year are listed.
Now- ready for some new vocab? In Kindergarten we call these super important high frequency words "Popcorn Words." Why? Well- It's just more fun! I tell the kinders that these are the words that should pop into their head instantly like a popcorn kernel popping. Before you know it we will get to the point where your kinder will look at a POPCORN word and read it just as fast as a popcorn kernel popping. In addition they will be able to write the POPCORN words in a snap.
Practice the POPCORN WORDS at home with your child! Here are some ideas to get you started:
--Spell them in playdoh --Find them in books --Cut out the letters from the newspaper and glue them on construction paper --Practice spelling them outloud --Look for the words in commercials --Write them on the driveway with sidewalk chalk --Type them on the iPad --Text them to Grandma --Spread shaving cream on the table and use your finger to write them --Pick a word, roll a die and write the word that number of times --Use special pens or pencils to write the words --Write them with a dry erase marker on a mirror
**We begin learning these words at the beginning of the year. These are words that do not fit phonemic rules. The kinders just have to "know" them. Therefore they can start memorizing them before they are fluent in all of their letter ID or letter sound names.
A packet of the Kindergarten Popcorn words will be sent home at Parent Night.

The first few weeks of school we are working on learning Color Songs to help us spell the Colors. red, yellow, blue, green, orange, purple, brown, black, white
