Dear Parent,

Thank you so much for volunteering your time to work in our classroom. Parent volunteers are  important in making our school year successful and I truly value you and your time. It is my wish that the time you spend volunteering at school is a positive experience for both you are your child. In order to know how best to use your time at school, please consider the following: 1. Your child’s ability to learn and socially interact with the other children is my first concern at school. Each child reacts differently to having his/her parent in the room. For this reason, please consider how your child reacts when you are in the classroom and consider if your volunteer time may be more successful in or out of the classroom. 2. Volunteering is not only helpful but most times a fun and special experience for both you and your child to share together. It is helpful to have a conversation with your child before you begin to volunteer about being independent and following school rules even when you come to help or to visit at school. 3. Each child in our classroom is special to me and to our class team. Each child has strengths and areas to improve on. I am asking that any observations or situations that may come up during our school day are kept completely confidential and are not shared with other parents. 4. I would like your first day of volunteering to be a day for you to observe the children, spend time with your child and get used to our class routines and rules. After the first day, I will have activities or work ready for you to do either in or out of the classroom. 5. Lastly, I hope you enjoy our first grade enthusiasm and energy while you are volunteering. Each day is unique and comes with it’s own set of rewards and challenges. Come prepared for “appropriate” noise, laughter, voices, movement, lots of learning, fun and smiles!
Thank you so much again! I am looking forward to working with you this year!

PARENT VOLUNTEER IDEAS
There are many different kinds of ways to volunteer in our school and classroom. If you are interested in volunteering in the classroom this year, here some ideas! If you are interested in a particular volunteer opportunity, please let me know by email or voice mail what you would like to do, what day may work and how often you would like to volunteer! VOLUNTEER IDEAS: Reading Group leader: Reading with a group of children or listening to individuals read. (Our reading time is in the morning each day.) Spelling Words helper: Working with individual children on learning and memorizing spelling words. (Morning or early afternoon.) Writing Workshop helper: Working with small groups of children or individual children on writing: sounding out words, using sight words. (Time will be determined) Math Group leader: Working with a small group of children on math problems and skills. (Our math time is in the afternoon time each day.) Copying papers or various paper work: This is such an important job and needed each week any time during the day! *Other volunteer opportunities will come up during the year such as fieldtrips, reading a book to the class and party volunteers. Thank you for your consideration in volunteering at school.
