Club and Anime Detour info

Anime Club

Anime club is simply a club where people share common interests. It's one of the largest and most diverse clubs at Champlin Park. We watch anime (Japanese animation) and sometimes talk about it. We meet on most Thursdays from right after school until 4:45/5pm in room B130 or the North Lecture Hall. Attendance to the club costs $5.00. First 3 visits are free, some meetings require that you've paid already to attended (such as the end of the year party, where we order pizza and provide soda and cake).

Anime covers every genre, and every age group. At the CPHS anime club we tend to watch PG-PG-13 "rated" (these are generally not formally rated by the MPAA, but age guidelines are available on the back of cases usually) movies and TV shows. There is language, there is gore, there is nudity-but none to the excess and nothing your child couldn't view at home on daylight TV.

Anime Detour

We have an opportunity to attend an annual convention called Anime Detour. Your student can stay in the hotel the convention is at with other club members and chaperones or commute to and from home.

Usually about 1/4 of the club members choose to attend the convention, this last year we had about half of the 80+ club members attend. We don't provide transportation to the hotel, but we do see if anybody else going can give them a ride to and from this event.

Your student can register early with the anime club for a group discount and pick up their badge (admittance pass) individually in one of the club's rooms at the convention whenever they arrive.

The club usually gets three rooms, two for girls and one for boys (most years fewer boys attended than girls). Room assignments will be handed out either on the meeting before Detour or when they arrive at Detour. One chaperone is assigned to each room. These will be chaperones in each of the Anime Club's rooms at ALL times. The only time there may not be is when there are staff members present. The chaperones may switch out each day or a room may have the same one for the whole weekend.

Students will be required to check in with their chaperone at designated times, this generally isn't a problem because students return to the room at more-or-less regular intervals for food and sleep. If you still feel uncomfortable with this feel free to set up times for your child to call you and check in. Students are not allowed to go off hotel grounds without a parent or unless they are going home.

Anime Detour is April 23-25, 2010 (two weeks later than usual because of Easter) at the Sheraton in Bloomington, MN. This is a new hotel for Detour but near to where it has been held in past years. We hope it will live up to the Ramada/Thunderbird (across from MOA) that it was previously held at.

Anime Detour is relatively safe in that it has various safety features set up to protect your child as long as they follow club, school, and Detour rules. These safety features are:

  • Security guards around the hotel and especially where Detour activities are taking place.
  • Badges for Detour attendees. Anime Detour staff has their own special badges so they can be found easily.
  • Door watchers in and out of all rooms where there are Anime Detour activities.
  • Students are required to check in with room chaperones at designated times.
  • As stated before there are rules for Anime Club, the school and Anime Detour that must be followed. These rules will be gone over on the mandatory Anime CLub meeting for all of those attending Anime Detour the day before Detour.

The convention starts at approximately at noon , but nothing really happens until 3 or later. You should try to get there before 7, because otherwise you have to wait for registration takers to eat-and you can't go anywhere. They usually are closed officially at 9, but this can change. You can leave anytime Sunday, most people choose to leave around checkout time. The CPHS club rooms will be evacuated at eleven; any luggage things may still be watched. We do not know if there will be checking at the front desk but there's usually a group of club people playing cards to watch any luggage.

Things you (the student) need to bring:

  • A blanket/ sleeping bag, and pillow,
  • Some food (mircrowaveable or 'just add hot water') amd drinks,
  • Any medications,
  • Spending money, it's not necessary but around $100 is normal
  • Changes of clothes (Please),
  • Something to carry your purchases in,
  • You may also want a lanyard; (they sometimes don't provide string for the badges) Though these last few years the've had clips and small (size of a small hand) travel type zip bags you can also keep money in. We aren't sure what type of clip, etc. they may use this year, though, so bring a string or lanyard just to be safe.

School and club rules still apply at Anime Detour, along with the rules of Anime Detour and the hotel. Anybody found breaking these rules will not be allowed to come to Detour with the school next year or the Anime Detour or hotel people will ask them not to return next year. If your child is found misbehaving they will be asked to leave and won't be refunded.

For more information on Anime Detour itself, go to animedetour.com . For more information on club specific information attend anime club and listen for announcements or ask.

Here is my e-mail (not the president's) krzfayrie@usfamily.net, just in case you're still worried. I attended Anime Detour all four years in high school and would be happy to answer any quetions anybody may have.
